We are just under 3 weeks away from WWE’s annual
Hell in a Cell PPV, yet the card as of right now, is about 15% complete. After
much anticipation, the HIAC match that will take place in Dallas, Texas on the
26th of October 2014 was finally announced and I cannot speak for
everyone but I know that a lot of people were not surprised, myself included. That
announcement being - John Cena Vs. Dean Ambrose will first take place at the
PPV, with the victor then going on to face Seth Rollins inside the Cell later
on in the night.
I have mixed emotions towards this…
Firstly, I am glad that both Ambrose & Rollins are getting the spotlight
that they so rightfully deserve (whether that is due to unfortunate
circumstances or not) and will both have the opportunity to showcase what they
are capable of doing in a main-event scene that has nothing to do with the WWE
World Title. With both of these guys rubbing shoulders with the poster-boy John
Cena, it is clear that WWE view both guys as two strong individuals who are capable
of being major stars… yet at the same time, it is also a bitter sweet
situation. If you look at past guys coming up that John Cena has worked with,
the end result has been far from positive and has not led to the construction
of a star; look at his recent feud with Bray Wyatt for verification (who is
arguably the most well rounded wrestler in the WWE right now – character wise),
yet his career post-Cena feud has been underwhelming and in all honestly,
completely disastrous for him and the entire Wyatt Family (I will post my
complete thoughts on The Wyatt Family once we see what all these vignettes that
have been airing about them, lead towards). Therefore, I am cautious when it
comes to this and am afraid that at HIAC, what we will see is John Cena
prevailing against Dean Ambrose and then going on to be victorious against Seth
Rollins inside the Cell (God, no). Could you call that paranoia? Yes, yes you
could; but you can’t really blame me once you look at history, can you? Overall,
I do believe that Cena coming out on top against two young guys who will be
main-eventing ‘Mania/winning world titles/be at the top of the company, some
day in the future, could indeed take place when this really is the last thing
that should occur here.
As to why I think Rollins/Ambrose is the
more viable option - story line wise it makes so much sense; they have been
feuding with each other since Rollins turned on him and Reigns back in early
June, 4 months ago, however within those 4 months, there has not been one big
massive pay off for this feud and specifically, Dean Ambrose. They have been
playing a cat and mouse game and overall I have enjoyed seeing Ambrose attempt
to get his hands on Rollins, with him cowardly running away. For others, I know
that they believe it is dragging on and on and in all honesty, I am getting
sick of this “Authority” angle but despite this, both Dean and Seth have proved
that their work in the ring has lived up to the hype of their feud. Their
lumberjack match at SummerSlam that I thought would be pretty underwhelming
caught me by surprise and told a great story, and then their match the
following night on Raw was just an insane fight and had us all on our toes. The
history between the two is also what makes it so much more compelling than
Cena/Rollins; It’s about revenge, and as I have said before, who doesn’t love a
good revenge story? The angle of this, with the crowd being behind and sympathetic
towards the “good” guy attempting to get retribution on the “bad” guy, is so
simplistic yet always so effective. Their legitimate hate for one another
transcends through the screen – it comes across as convincing and realistic,
unlike others we have seen in the past that did not make for captivating TV e.g.
Wyatt/Jericho.
So, what better way to fight this all out
than inside HIAC and have it culminate in a major main-event match? Cena Vs.
Rollins is not worthy of a HIAC match once you compare both feuds. And as
Ambrose himself said on SmackDown - “you lost one night, I could have lost my
entire career” – Cena vs. Rollins inside HIAC because of Rollins interfering in
his title match just does not sit well or make sense, a HIAC match for that?
No. I was never happy with Cena’s involvement in this feud, I wanted him to
stay away from both guys but now, we have to make the most of the situation and
see it for what it is. I understand why he is involved because, well, what else
is there for him to do? The lack of stars and the champion being around is
beginning to show and of course WWE had to throw him into the mix of the hottest feud going.
Also, everyone wants to see this match,
there is big opportunity in it and as I mentioned, with the lack of stars right
now, both guys can be elevated with a massive match, that will put
them 100% on the map. Ambrose has been put in this spot due to Roman Reigns’
injury and he has to capitalise on it, which to his credit, he has been doing
and as JR would say, “maximising his minutes”;
he needs to show that he is the guy
and at the same time, cement Rollins as a mega heel. Overall, to show that both
guys CAN main-event.
Hell
in a Cell HAS to be Ambrose’s night imo.
But can they headline a PPV and will WWE
allow this and have Cena on the back-burner? Imo, yes. I would 100 times over
see something fresh with Ambrose/Rollins inside a Cell than see Cena in the
main-event for the millionth time. Especially as WWE is going through a sort of
transition period where NXT is becoming more prominent, the younger guys are
coming up alongside the failure of the WWE building stars; they need to stop
relying on Cena and THIS is their chance to change that. At a time where there
is this major lack of strong talent (despite the roster being insanely talented) they
bring a sense of hope…. which we all need when it comes to the WWE right now.
In terms of a high quality match, look no
further than Ambrose & Rollins; they just have natural chemistry in the
ring - their FCW matches have highlighted
what they are capable if given a good amount of time and locking them inside a cell
will just advance that and be something to see.
However, a stipulation has now been added
to the Cena/Ambrose match. I don’t want to spoil it for those who do not know
but overall it seems like it was chosen in order to protect Cena from being
pinned cleanly and letting Ambrose pick up the win, but then again, they could
swerve us too, as right now people are speculating that Ambrose will definitely
pick up the victory due to this, but come on, it’s Cena… we can never be sure. – If you
are curious and cannot wait until Friday to find out the stip, then check out
spoilers online, or you can just tweet me! @WrestlingMenu
Nevertheless, in terms of the future and
where Ambrose/Rollins would go post-this feud, I have no clue, especially since
the roster is so thin. Yet, in terms of focusing on the moment at hand, there
needs to be a dramatic end to their feud. This is the dramatic end and it is a
perfect way to close it out.
It
could in turn, change the dynamic of the WWE.
This is one match I want to see
and the one match I believe that the WWE need to provide us with. Do the right
thing WWE and don’t screw this up.
