Dean Ambrose has been off of WWE TV for 3
weeks now, and fans are patiently awaiting his return, well, some, desperately.
After a brutal, incredible match between two up and coming stars, Ambrose and
Rollins tore the house down in a Falls Count Anywhere match on the post
SummerSlam episode of Raw in the main event. Ambrose was then beaten down in a
2-1 attack at the hands of Rollins and Kane, with his former brother brutally curbstomp-ing
him onto cinder blocks. Dean was stretchered out of the arena where he then rejected
medical attention backstage, got up and left... He has not been seen or heard
from since, subsequently putting him out of action indefinitely…for now.
In reality, the 28 year old talented individual
that he is, has landed himself a lead-role in a WWE movie titled, “Lockdown”, which is the second installment in the
“Action Six-Pack” movies with Lionsgate. Here is a brief description for the movie:
“’Lockdown’ follows a police
officer who returns to duty after recovering from a gun shot wound to discover
incriminating evidence of illegal activities against those closest to him. He
quickly finds himself trapped inside his own precinct, hunted and in search of
the truth, as the crooked cops stop at nothing to recover the evidence.”
For those interested, here is the official
link from WWE with more details:
Seeing as Dean has been in WWE since 2011
and only on the main roster just under 2 years, this is a massive opportunity for
him and a chance for him to prove himself to WWE that he is indeed marketable,
likeable and can make the company a whole lot of money. WWE movies have never been that successful, but Dean brings in an
element of intrigue to it. Post The Shield breakup, the man has been shining, and
although arguable (coming from someone who was a massive Shield fan), it is
fair to say that he was being held back in some sense by being apart of that
group. Don’t’ get me wrong, I would love to see a reunion happen one day but he
was not able to fully portray his character - they had to share the mic time
and share all of the ring time. Towards the end of The Shield run, Dean was
made to look the weakest in comparison to Seth and Roman, which I believe
everyone can agree with. Once Seth turned and The Shield split, Ambrose hit it
off STRAIGHT AWAY with an incredible promo, from the get-go showing what he was
capable of. He has developed QUICK since and we have only seen the tip of the
iceberg with him. From all of his antics, from, hiding in a trunk and a
birthday present to attack Seth, to destroying Rollins briefcase, to doing the
ice-bucket challenge on Mr. MITB (and the list goes on), he has shown fans
quick, why he is a long-term player and fans have come to root for him due to
his likeability of being “one of us” – he has the potential to be a future main
event player, world champion and overall star.
To put it quite simply, he is the
definition of entertainment. He has years of wrestling experience and just
knows the business, from his facial expressions, to the way he portrays a
storyline to how he paces a match and not forgetting his unique mic skills. He
has it all, including natural charisma. I’ve said it before but a talent like
him does not come along very often. I am just afraid that due to this WWE will
not know exactly what to do with him or if he will be provided with the
opportunity to win the World Title one day. Fans may have to fight for him to
be THE guy…but with all of the support he is already building, that won’t be
hard to do.
Hence, seeing him perform in a movie is
something that a LOT of people will want to see. He is a character, has a hold
on his character. Seeing him in such a foreign environment outside of the ring will
draw in a lot of people. I do believe WWE chose the right time for him to make
this movie. As right now, people are talking about him, they want to know more,
they want to see more so this just opens more doors for him as well as the
fans.
So now, when will the man himself be back? I
do love the fact that WWE are running the storyline of Dean being missing, in
turn making everyone wonder where exactly he is, what his explanation will be
when he’s back and overall making for a very unpredictable situation which is
great imo. However, I do wish they had made Seth Rollins act a bit paranoid or
filmed segments prior to show that Ambrose could be lurking anywhere and to
keep him relevant. Nevertheless, he still is relevant, fans are anxiously
awaiting the return but that would have added to the intensity of the rivalry.
As of right now, he is being advertised for
the Raw after Night of Champions. This means that he could either show up on
Raw and come for Rollins or be apart of something at Night of Champions by
either attacking Rollins if he attempts to cash in, but if Lesnar retains, will
Rollins even want to cash in on him? Or there is a possibility of Ambrose
coming back to make the save for Reigns from Rollins and the Authority, but
this depends on what exactly the match is and who is involved. For me personally,
I want to see him make his big comeback at Night of Champions, in a VERY
unpredictable way. There is a massive opportunity with this return (as I
mentioned in my Raw review earlier – check it out below). He has been compared
to Stone Cold Steve Austin in the past and branching on from this, they could
do something crazy like SCSA has done in the past. Remember all those times
Stone Cold drove into the arena in a Zamboni or all the beer truck antics? I’m
not saying he’s the next Stone Cold, there will never be another Stone Cold and
Dean is one of a kind himself but something impactful along the lines of that
needs to be done – just imagine the crowd reaction/pop. They have to make the
most of this. I will be gutted if it something big isn’t done, I will not be
content with just average.
Once he is back, where does he go from
there? The introduction of Reigns within this angle has caused for a very
interesting dynamic. As I did mention in my previous Raw review, I hated how
WWE made Reigns seem irrelevant in The Shield break up and that he was not
phased by it, all he wanted was the World Title, which makes zero sense. From the moment they debuted, The Shield were
all about unity, the numbers game, brotherhood and risking themselves for each
other, so why would his number 1 priority be the championship? Wouldn’t he want
to get revenge first? That was an angle I did not like and I’m sure plenty of
others felt the same. Also, it’s pretty ironic that he kept the entire Shield
gimmick isn’t it?
Yet, I could watch Ambrose Vs. Rollins for
months and never get bored. They just have natural chemistry and click whenever
they’re in the ring together, so will we get a re-match? I would like to see it
and it has to happen. Ambrose needs to get retribution but at the same time WWE
are building Rollins as very strong, take yesterday’s Raw, he gained a clean
win over Sheamus, which I thought would end in DQ, so it is difficult to predict
whether or not WWE would even give Dean the clean victory. Ideally, inside HIAC
is where I would like to see it all go down, but I highly doubt we will get
that. Now taking into the fact that Reigns is involved, I’m not to sure that this
will be a straight one on one feud now, although it should be. I initially
wanted Roman involved but I’ve been enjoying Seth and Dean way too much on
their own that I really do not want anything taking away from it. I do see this
angle going on for a few more months (as it should). There does need to be a
big show down between all three guys, however. All of them are stars but since
their solo careers have began, Dean has shown it the most, WWE need to use
these 3 talents to show that the future is bright and put them in that
main-event spot to prove it.
However, on the other end, movies are also unpredictable.
What if “Lockdown” is not completed by NoC? We aren’t actually guaranteed that Ambrose
will be back in time for the PPV. We just have to hope that he is!
WWE have the chance to build a star from
this return. I just hope they realise this, capitalise on this and capitalise
BIG in order to build for the future.
